Seniors Mick Ward and Tony Cisneros perform the lunge matrix as part of their warmup before cross country practice on Aug. 24.

Winning wasn’t too hard for the boys cross country team last year.

They placed first in four meets and came in first at sectionals at Edwardsville High School. The varsity team was led by state champ Soren Knudsen and others who followed closely.

This year the boys team has only one senior that made the state roster last year: Cody Hoshell. Hoshell didn’t have the strongest finish last year at the state meet, but has become a leader for the juniors and underclassmen who look up to him.

Jordan Freese is a junior to look out for in the 2017 season. He had dominant performances behind Knudsen last year, placing fifth in both conference and regional runs. More runners that are stepping up to take leadership are juniors Mark Dames and Seth Joder.

“People can look forward to this year, an underdog team that going to come out of nowhere and #shocktheworld,” Freese said.

Coach Kevin Gummerson is also looking forward to the men’s season.

“Who is gonna fill the big shoes and take on the leadership roles?” Gummerson said.  “But the most exciting thing for this year is how hard the team is working for another great season.”

The Indians will be running their first meet at Maxwell Park in Normal this coming Saturday, Aug. 26.
