The varsity girls cross country team faces West Aurora at home on Sept. 19. Minooka is currently 2-2.

After taking 9th place at the state finals last season, Minooka girls cross country is ready for another dominant and winning season.

“This season we are going to fight, battle, and claw, and especially learn from it,” head coach Kevin Gummerson said.

At the start of the 2020 season, the varsity girls are 2-2 and the JV squad is 4-0.

“I think we can make the best out of this season with everything that’s going on right now. As long as we follow the new protocols and still have fun,” sophomore Sophia Miller said.

With the season being limited due to the COVID-19 rules, Minooka is making the best out of their season.

“Being honest about symptoms and wearing a mask and washing hands is what keeps us healthy and able to practice and compete,” Gummerson said.

On Sept. 12, the Minooka girls faced their biggest threat to date, according to Gummerson, which was Yorkville.  The Foxes finished 2nd place last year at the state finals.

While the Minooka varsity girls ran tough, they finished just behind Yorkville this year, 22-37.

Minooka’s first competition of the season resulted in a clean sweep against Plainfield North with every level picking up a win.

Minooka’s next meet is Sept. 19 at home against West Aurora.  The JV boys run at 9 a.m., varsity boys at 9:30, JV girls at 10:15, and varsity girls at 10:45.
