The Minooka boys tennis team was only a week into practice last year when their 2020 season ended up getting canceled. Last year was looking promising, but it looks just as good this year for the boys.

This is a very well-rounded team. Headlined by seniors Manny Campuzano, Brendan Bisbee, and Cole Uphoff, head coach Trevor Shields recognizes the potential of his group and has high expectations.

“I am looking forward to growing our program this year,” Shields said. “I believe if we compete at the level that we can, being in the top three in conference is a real possibility.”

In the eyes of Shields, the biggest key to success this season is working as a team and helping each other improve as athletes and as people in general.

“Working hard everyday at practice and having the desire to truly get better each day will make this season a success,” Shields said.

Going into every season, sports teams have goals that they want to achieve throughout, and this boys tennis team is no different.

“The goals for the season are to finish the season without any major interruptions, be in the top three  in conference, and send as many athletes to the state tournament as possible,” Shields said. “If, at the end of the season, we have done those things, it means we did all of the little things right along the way.”

With the season soon approaching, coach Shields and his assistant Matt Marino are excited to see what their squad can do.

“While we might not have a huge team numbers wise, the athletes that are out at the courts each day are truly great people,” Shields said. “Coach Marino and myself look forward to coaching each and every day!”

Minooka boys tennis had their first varsity match at home against Plainfield North on April 21. Minooka won, 4-3.
