The fresman football team picked up its first win of the season against Romeville.

It was a great back and forth game that came down to the end.

Minooka’s freshman football team traveled to Romeoville on Sept. 11 and escaped with a victory 16-12. They won by getting a late turnover to seal the win.

Caden Uphoff led the rushing attack with a touchdown and many big runs. The defense bounced back from last week’s showing by only giving up 12 points and got two turnovers.

The game started with Romeoville getting the football first and Minooka forcing a quick punt. David Rabe made three tackles in four plays for Minooka on that drive.

Connor Davis got the start for Minooka as regular starting quarterback Michael Serra was on the sideline. Neither team scored any points throughout the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Romeoville scored first with a touchdown run by their quarterback, to put Romeoville up 6-0.

Serra started at quarterback in the second and for the rest of the game.

Late in the second quarter, Serra found Ty Couch wide open for a Minooka touchdown. They got the two-point conversion to put them up 8-6 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Romeoville was driving and everybody thought they were going to take the lead, but safety Jordan Freeman thought differently as he got a big interception midway through the third.

However, Minooka couldn’t capitalize on this turnover and Romeoville threw a bomb into the end zone to take a 12-6 lead.

Minooka was trailing going into the 4th quarter. Then they started to feed Uphoff who found his way into the end zone and got the conversion to put them up 16-12.

With about 3 minutes left in the game, Romeoville was at Minooka’s own 30-yard line when Cameron Loudermilk forced the fumble and Cole Spivey recovered it to seal the first win of the season for Minooka.

“I think we played really great actually, but we could have played better,” Serra said. “We got lucky that a couple big plays got called back because of penalties. Just a couple things we need to fix going into next week.”

It was indeed as Romeoville was very close to scoring.

“I think we won this game because we got lucky, and they made more mistakes than we did,” running back AJ Frescura said.

This was Minooka’s first win of the season.
