Boys wrestling has success at regionals

Minooka had six wrestlers take Top 3 at the IHSA 3A regional in Moline.

Saturday, Feb. 4, six teams competed – Yorkville, Joliet West, Minooka, Normal, Moline, Bradley, Joliet, and Pekin. Yorkville won with a score of 213.5, Joliet West was second with 150, and Minooka finished third with a score of 140.5. 

 Minooka’s six wrestlers will be moving on to the sectional round which will be held on Feb. 10-11 in Normal.

At 120 pounds, junior Damien Flores wrestled three matches and took first place with a major decision, tech fall, and a fall.

“I went out there and wrestled my matches, controlled the pace and used my stuff,” said Flores.

Sophomore Cole Spivey placed third at 126 pounds, losing his first match to a pin then winning three straight to get into sectionals with two pins and a decision.


Junior Cale Stonitsch wrestled at 132 pounds and placed second overall. Stonitsch wrestled to the championship round with a fall and a major decision but falling short of first losing 3-1.

“I performed good, but could have done better and I need to keep working for sectionals,” said Stonitsch.

Senior Dominic Schiavone went 2-1 taking 2nd place with a pin, decision, and a loss by decisions in the finals.

Elijah Munoz, senior, took the championship home at 152 pounds with a first round bye, a fall, and a medical forfeit.

Munoz Biggest takeaway from the tournament was “going out there and winning the tournament, it was my first regional tournament win and felt pretty good.”

With a major decision, decision and a loss in the finals, senior Cody Pelton took second place. 

Coaches for the team include Michael Kimberlin, Anthony Rink, and Jake Residori.
