Minooka fans celebrate the girls volleyball team winning the sectional championship on Nov. 3.

This Saturday is a huge one for MCHS sports.

Three teams are competing far into the IHSA state series: girls volleyball, girls cross country, and boys cross country.

On Thursday the girls volleyball team defeated Plainfield Central in two sets, winning the first one 25-14, and the second at 25-20. The victory marked their first Sectional title since 1999, and continued the Lady Indians’ march towards state glory.

On Saturday they will be playing against Normal Community High School at Normal Community at 1 p.m. in the super sectional game. The winner of this game will move on to play the winner of Dekalb versus Lincolnshire in the state semifinals.

The cross country state finals will take place at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The girls race begins at 1 p.m., and the boys race will follow at 2 p.m. There is plenty at stake for both teams.

Last weekend the girls showed their dominance, finishing individuals first, second, third, and fourth in the sectional title race. The order was Mackenzie Callahan, Ashley Tutt, Emily Shelton, and Vivian Van Eck, respectively.

Callahan broke a course record by 20 seconds en route to their third straight team sectional title.

Saturday at state, the girls are looking to capture their second state title.

The boys also won the team sectional title last weekend. It marked their second straight. Senior Soren Knudsen took home first place individually.

Saturday the boys are looking to improve on last year’s 16th place finish at state.

MCHS will have fan busses for both events. A fan bus leaves MCHS at 10 a.m. for the cross country meet in Peoria. A second fan bus leaves MCHS at 11 a.m. for the volleyball game in Normal.
