The PPC sample doughnuts from seven local places. Here’s who has the best.

Perhaps one of the most versatile breakfast foods around, doughnuts bring joy to the world regardless of your age, and there’s something for everybody. Whether you like vanilla, chocolate, fluffy, dense, rainbow sprinkles, fruity fillings, or pastry cream, it is nearly impossible to not find a doughy delight that suits your fancy.

The staff at the Peace Pipe Chatter decided to test which ones are the best to grab around town. The shops which the doughnuts were purchased represent specialty shops to general grocery stores: Mariano’s, Jewel, Casey’s, Dunkin Donuts, Home Cut Donuts, Donut Den, and Morris Bakery. Three glazed doughnuts and three chocolate long johns were purchased from each location and randomly numbered for anonymous taste-testing.

Several doughnuts were deemed as way too sweet, possibly bread-like, slightly flavorless, or even an awkward aftertaste. In the end, one of each kind raised high above it’s competitors.

The award for the best glazed donut goes to Donut Den, with the best glaze itself among the bunch, a slight chewiness to offset the smoothness of the glaze, and a different flavor other than simply sweet.

In a surprising twist, the best chocolate long john was awarded to Dunkin Donuts, the cheapest and most convenient of locations around. It was praised for the pungent chocolate flavor that makes the frosting amazingly good and a cake-like texture that was not too bready and not too dense.
