The varsity baseball team begins its season Wednesday, March 16 against Joliet Catholic.

The Indians are looking to improve on their 18-10 finish last year, which some might say is a pretty good record to finish with. But the Indians have their expectations set a lot higher.

In conference, the Indians were 10-5 and finished third. Their season came to an end in the sectional final on a tough loss to Joliet West.

It’s known that their goal for this year is to win the sectional final, and more.

A key thing about building a team is confidence and team chemistry, which the Indians thrive in both.

“I expect that we will play good because of how well the team has bonded and how well we communicate,” said senior starting pitcher Jack Otis.

Otis is just one of a few pitchers that have improved on their pitches and velocity.

Seniors Ryan Norman, Cole Parish, and sophomore Ryan Anderson are also looking to return to the bump and dominate.

“I’m confident in our pitching rotation and know they will get the job done,” said teammate Mitch Thomas.

Although pitching will be a strength for the Nook this season, on the other side of the diamond the lineup is balanced with power, speed, and contact.

Returning senior Ivan Dahlberg is looking to have another good season behind the dish.

Seniors Thomas and Caleb Parker are two lefty bats that can provide power and speed at the plate.

On top of that, juniors Mikey Murphy, Sully Minor, Dylan Cecala, Andrew Forillo, and Andrew Mack are all versatile players who can defend their positions well while also providing production at the plate.

It’s safe to say the guys have a lot of confidence in themselves and their team. When asked what they’re most looking forward to this season, most guys’ responses were “playoffs.”

Head coach Jeff Petrovic said he likes playing in the WJOL tournament and competing in conference games during the week, but in the end “…I love postseason baseball, I look forward to it every year.”

Petrovic is no stranger to playoff baseball, with nine regional titles under his belt, and three sectional championships.

The Indians are set to open up their season at Joliet Catholic Academy on Wednesday March 16.
