Chelsea Gutierrez is co-president of the student council. She does this impressive job with co-worker and friend Noa Joshnson. She joined the student council when she was a freshman. This interview with Nook News has been edited for clarity and length.
Q: What inspired you to join the council?
A: Being a leader, and being a part of such a big club that has an impact on our community here at MCHS.
Q: What are your plans for upcoming outside school activities and dances?
A: Right now we are currency planning Homecoming. I’m in charge of Backyard Bash. On the Tuesday of homecoming week. There is going to be a whole bunch of inflatables, so I had to call the company to tell them what inflatables we wanted. We also had to order a bunch of board games like Connect 4, Jenga, and I also believe we are doing bean bag toss. That is like my role right now. Also next month, I will be leading the meetings for all of the student council meetings. Until October when I switch off to my co-president, Noa Johnson.
Q: Do you and Miss Johnson work together all year or do you guys switch off every semester?
A: Every month we switch.
Q: What are you most excited for this year in the student council?
A: Definitely the assembly.
Q: Why the assembly?
A: We usually start in the morning. So the whole day we are practicing the assembly over and over again, until it is time to do the assembly. Basically we set up any of the activities for the assembly. We get to eat Jimmy Johns for lunch in the skybox so that’s pretty fun. I also love hanging out with the board up there. We can kinda just relax or in better words coming together like an actual club and bonding.
Q: So what have you done so far in this season?
A: This season we have, we have currently picked out all the decorations for Homecoming for South and Central. Right now we are planning on how to put those decorations. We have also gotten all our food trucks booked for Backyard Bash, we have also gotten all of our games too.
Q: What exactly is Backyard Bash?
A: So basically it’s a bunch of bands. School bands can sign up to perform. So there is a lot of music and dancing in the cafeteria. While outside of the cafeteria there is a bunch of inflatables, axe throwing, and a teacher dunk tank where teachers can sign up to be dunked. We also have food trunks as I mentioned. So it’s just a time where you can chill and have fun with your friends. You can also buy tickets to join a raffle to win different prizes.
Q: What would you like to accomplish your senior year as student council president?
A: I would really want to just leave an impact on the school. Or do something meaningful for the school.
Q: How did you become co-president?
A: So I ran for vice president, actually and then Noa ran for president. Then our advisers decided to do co-presidents because they thought we would work best side by side.
Q: Do you like co-president or would you rather have a vice president and a president?
A: I like the co-president. I like sharing the role with her. She’s a really good person, so I enjoy our time together, and I enjoy how we’re both able to communicate ourselves very clearly and what we want for the club.
Q: Is that how you and Noa Johnson met, or have you met before?
A: A little bit of both. We met in our AP World History class, and then we got closer together in the club.
Q: How do you feel about Trisha Paytas’s children’s name?
A: It’s really funny that you ask that. I actually love Trisha Paytas. She is like my idol. I really wanted to go see her Eras tour. Back to your question though, I saw someone say that they were just nicknames. While I saw a video of her saying that like no, that’s their real names.
