Ava Crites is a senior at MCHS and is the president of the National Honors Society. She has been a part of it since junior year. NHS sponsored the Pink Out football game on Oct. 10. This interview with Nook News has been edited for clarity and length.
Q: What made you want to do National Honors Society?
A: Well, it’s good for college applications, but I also am just really involved in school so it’s just another opportunity for me to get involved and meet new people.
Q: How long have you been a part of the NHS?
A: It’s only for juniors and seniors so I joined last year, and I’m currently the president sitting this year.
Q: What’s one challenge you face everyday while being a part of the NHS?
A: Kind of just keeping everything organized because as president there’s just a lot of responsibilities that go into it, and I kind of have to lead by example not only to the board people, but also the members and the prospective members coming in this year as well.
Q: Who is someone you look up to in the NHS and why?
A: Probably Jake Simpson. He was on the board last year and he was just a really fun guy, really just go-lucky, carefree, just super happy all the time.
Q: What is your favorite part about being on the NHS and why?
A: My favorite part is probably the volunteer opportunities that come with it because I’m super involved in and outside of school, so I like to help out the community as much as I can.
Q: Has this been something you’ve always wanted to do?
A: I wasn’t thinking about it too much in sophomore year until I got the letter in the middle of junior year, and then I was like, yeah, I probably should.
Q: What are your biggest accomplishments of being on the NHS?
A: We hosted Freshman Experience, which was definitely a lot of work and right now we are planning our Pink Out game, and I think it’s going really well. Super excited to see how it turns out.
Q: What is a movie, or book, TV show, or color that’s so bad it should be illegal?
A: Oh my gosh… I don’t really watch a lot of TV. I like reading. I just don’t have a lot of time. My least favorite color is orange.
