After losing their first game back from the All-Star break, the Chicago Blackhawks stopped their three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory against the Arizona Coyotes on Feb. 2.

The Hawks scored two of their goals on the powerplay thanks to right winger Patrick Kane and forward Marian Hossa.  Kane got the team rallying by scoring his 16th goal of the season during the first period with 8:44.  

Just 1:12 seconds later, right winger Ryan Hartman scored his 11th goal of the season for the Hawks. Hartman’s shot went between several players down in the crease, which made it difficult for goaltender Mike Smith to make a low pad save.  

“The Hawks were on fire as they scored three goals in the first period and giving them an advantage that they needed,” Blaise Smith, junior, said.  

With 14:15 left of the first period, Hossa answered the call with his 19th goal of the year.  Hossa took a saucer pass from Artemi Panarin and made a leading move on Smith. The Hawks led the shot department in the first period 14-6, and they went 2-4 on the powerplay of the night.  

Things went the opposite for the Hawks in the second period.  They were lacking their self-confidence and cost their team with five penalties in the second.  The ‘Yotes took advantage of the Hawks penalty kill as they captured three goals on Corey Crawford.  

Oliver Ekman-Larsson gave the Yotes their first goal as he scored on a 5-on-3 penalty kill against the Hawks, which marks his 10th goal of the season.  

Seven of Larsson’s 10 goals have came from the power play this season. Unfortunately, center Jonathan Toews and center Artem Anisimov were both in the penalty box during those goals.

“I was really disappointed when the Hawks went on the penalty kill.  Those penalties were unprofessional towards the the team.  If we didn’t have those costly penalties, those goals wouldn’t have gone in,” Jake Fuller, senior, said.     

The other two goals were deflected by center Christian Dvorak as he tipped a shot from Shane Doan, right Wing, at 14:24.  Brendan Perlini, left wing, scored on a shot that ricocheted off of Brent Seabrook, defensemen.  

The Hawks only goal in the second was a one-timer shot by Panarin. Anisimov gave him a crisp pass that gave them a one goal lead at 5:24.  Surprisingly, the shots went completely the opposite, favoring the Yotes 14-6.

“It made my night as the Hawks ended their three game losing streak.  We just have to get back on track of the win column,” Trevor Riley, senior, said.

No one was able to ring the horn into the third period. I was a pretty quiet for both teams battling the puck. The ‘Yotes were unable to tie the Hawks to make it to overtime. The three stars of the night were Kane as he scored a goal and one assist, Dvorak with one goal and assist, and Hossa with only one goal of the night for the old guy.  

The shot column was active during the game as the Hawks took 26 and the Coyotes had 27. Crawford made 24 saves that night as he was very productive for his team to earn the W. The Hawks will look take on the Dallas Stars away on Saturday, Feb. 4.

The players and the fans of Chicago were satisfied with the win that they took on Thursday night. The Hawks are at 67 points in third place right behind the Sharks with 68.
