The Minooka Police Department has been investigating over 65 cases for credit card fraud in the Minooka area since April. The investigation sparked after a Facebook  group called “Minooka Moms” started posting about stolen credit cards on June 10.

The suspected fraud took place at multiple gas stations, Wendy’s, and Dunkin Donuts. The money stolen is being spent in Chicago, Elgin, Elk Grove, and other places in Illinois.

The Minooka Police Department has yet to find how the information is being stolen. They are predicting it is the use of skimmers at pumps. They are also asking workers if they have seen anything suspicious.

“I think that people could be hacking the business’s system or could be using their own personal scanners to reach people’s credit card information,”Jackie Sekula, senior, said. “I think it’s ridiculous and pretty annoying. Like why do you have to go out and steal someone else’s hard earned money?”

The investigation is making local businesses employee’s check ID’s before taking someone’s card. Surprisingly some people seemed annoyed by the extra security because it takes a little more time. The checks are just to keep customers safe.

“We have to see IDs whenever someone has to pay with a credit card. Just to take precautions, you know? People aren’t really kind about it,” Danielle Sumner, senior, said. Sumner works at Wendy’s in Minooka.

For now the police department suggests buying everything in cash and avoiding drive-thrus and going inside instead.
