Relay for Life raises more than $6,000

Senior Cody Hoshell follows close behind the leader of the relay race, hosted by the leaders of the Smith Strong lap. Eight total teams participated in an elimination-style relay structured much like like of a 4 x 200-meter track relay.

The 5th annual NHS sponsored Relay for Life took place this past Sunday, Jan. 14 at Central Campus from 12 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event began with a “Survivors” lap with NHS members lining the halls and ended with the luminaria lighting to close out the night.

Other laps included fun themes like “Food,” “Karaoke” (sponsored by senior class council) and “Harry Potter” with more serious dedications like “Service Appreciation” and “Smith Strong.”

As usual, there were also tribute banners to those teachers from MCHS who have passed away from cancer as well as two students whom the school has lost since last year’s relay.

NHS has raised over $40,000 across the past four years of the MCHS Relay For Life and set a goal of raising $8,000 this year.

Overall, the event raised just over $6,500 for the American Cancer Society and local community members, $5,000 of which had already been raised before the event had even begun.
