Bob Tyrell was one of Minooka’s greatest athletic directors. During his time serving in that role at Minooka from 2005-2023, MCHS had incredible success in sports.
Minooka brought home 23 IHSA trophies and four state championships in Tyrell’s years as head of the athletic department. Four teams won state championships.
“Each of our state championship teams has their own unique story. It was great to have the opportunity to be with them during their journey,” Tyrell said.
Tyrell is being inducted into the MCHS Athletic Hall of Fame this year for special merit.
Tyrell started off his career at Minooka, teaching industrial arts in 1995. He later worked as a dean and quickly became involved in athletics, coaching at various levels of football and baseball.
“I have tremendous memories from my coaching years. Most of all, I remember the great athletes and coaches that I worked with,” Tyrell said.
Tyrell was head varsity baseball coach in 2002 and 2003. The team had an overall record of 46-23, won two regional titles, and one conference title.
Tyrell oversaw MCHS’s change enormously when it grew into two campuses in 2008.
“When the housing boom started, it was an adjustment for everyone. We went from knowing every kid who entered the high school to not really knowing many of the students. In time, we realized we were still getting great kids, just a lot more of them,” he said.
Tyrell was dedicated to his job as he could often be found at MCHS well before teachers arrived in the morning and still at campus after practices concluded.
“It is tremendous to watch all of our young people grow into adulthood and become great people. It was my privilege to work with great coaches who truly care about the athletes that they coach,” Tyrell said.
He was also named IHSA Class 3A Wrestling Administrator of the Year in 2010.
“I am truly humbled by my induction into the MCHS Hall of Fame. It wouldn’t have happened without Jeri Brockett (athletics secretary) and the outstanding athletes and coaches and great community support,” Tyrell said.
Tyrell will be recognized before the varsity Homecoming football game on Oct. 3. Other Hall of Fame inductees who will be recognized then include Dustin Williams (athlete), Tim Stevens (athlete), Ashley Jones (athlete), Nina Simotes Scott (athlete), Ray Liberatore (coach), and the 2013 softball team.
