The flag football program is making history at MCHS. The girls junior varsity team unofficially won the conference, and finished with a record of 8-1.

“I feel like our record shows the work we have put in this year,” JV coach Brandon Thompson said.

The girls have put in so much hard work and dedication this season with setting the new standard for this new sport for MCHS. 

“We had to build this program from scratch,” JV coach Jon Ryan said. 

Coaches Ryan and Thompson both had a tough time this year at tryouts. Without knowing any of the girls strengths and weaknesses, they had to go off luck this year. 

It worked out well for the team. The JV squad only had one loss all year.  It was to Oswego, who they then came back and beat a few days later.

The girls grew closer as the season went on.

“We are grateful to have to have team dinners every Tuesday during the season,” Ryan said. 

The privilege of having these dinners with the girls is very valuable. They bond at these dinners to not only talk about football and ways to improve, but they can also talk about other things outside of school and football.

“I got to meet a lot of new people. And also, it was amazing for me to be a part of a new sport,” Elena Soloy said. 

Players have been able to make new friends and memories with this new sport. They get to learn new things and build bonds that will last a lifetime. Some of these girls’ favorite part of the day is the time spent with the coaches and their teammates. 

Soloy is already thinking about next season.

“My offseason … I’m gonna be training for track and field so my speed is the fastest it can be,” she said.
