Minooka’s varsity boys tennis team won 4-3 against Bolingbrook, earning them their first win of the season.
On April 7, Minooka faced Bolingbrook at Minooka’s home courts.
“They did not get complacent and did what they needed to do,” head coach Peter Klepec said. “They never got comfortable. They executed some great shots and played extremely well.”
Minooka tennis always shows up and is ready to play, whether it’s singles or doubles. Singles player and sophomore Keaton Kapellas battled against Bolingbrook. He made adjustments to his play and figured out what he had to do to score points.
“I played against an upperclassman, and he was very talented. I felt like it actually helped me to improve and sort of rise to the challenge, along with coming up with different strategies to disrupt him and to win points,” Kapellas said.
Minooka’s second doubles team worked hard and played well as partners to secure their win for their team. Sophomore Derek Przybyla and junior Maddox Lundeen started off strong right away, and didn’t let up.
“Having energy and motivation is where it’s at. In the first set, we were rolling through it. Second set, we lost two games and were down. I talked to Maddox, and told him if we got our energy up and got our serves in, we could take the lead back,” Przybyla said.
In addition, second doubles had great communication and strategies. Bolingbrook’s strong competition kept them on their game and helped them play better as a team.
“The strongest part of our play against Bolingbrook was how in sync my partner and I were the whole time. Our movement was really sharp, and we were always in the right position and covering for each other,” Lundeen said.
Malayna Martinez is a manager for the boys tennis team.
